DOMS

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS): The pain and discomfort associated with DOMS typically peaks 24-48 hours after an exercise bout, and resolves within 96 hours.  (http://www.unm.edu/~lkravitz/Article%20folder/domos.html)

Really, I like to consider it the pain that takes my mind off  the jiggly bits! LOL! Really! I mean, when you have DOMS in the quads 2 days after doing sixty 45 pound squats it sort of takes away any other sensations! So, think of working out this way: If you workout and get DOMS, then you won’t feel so fat (or much of anything else for that matter) because you’ll be too busy concetrating on those screaming muscles.

Yeah, that’s it. I’m now considering DOMS a mind trick. LOL!

Looking Forward To Pain

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I know it sounds weird, but I’m actually looking forward to my surgery tomorrow. Why? because I will have a weekend with absolutely NO worries. I have permission to relax, unwind and heal without having to care that the house gets cleaned, the kids keep quiet, groceries need to be bought, and so on.  I will be in pain, that pain means I will be healing. I have given myself the weekend off in order to heal without life’s daily worries getting to me.

How does this relate to health and fitness? It works the same way! You work out, and you may feel some pain a day or two later. That pain is known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and it means your muscles are healing. In the healing is where the growth takes place giving you bigger and stronger muscle fibers to go about your daily activities. In order to grow, you need to give those muscles rest days or you will over-stimulate them and may do more harm than good.

Tonight is my first belly dancing class in a long while, and I will make sure to report on it this weekend.

Tomorrow morning I have mouth surgery and will be out of commission most of the day tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I discovered a yummy new dessert! Just combine the following:

  • Key Lime Pie yogurt (light variety)
  • fat free whipped topping
  • fat free grahams or cookies crushed (I actually didn’t have any, but I will next time!)
